GOOD AFTERNOON, PRESIDENT GOATEE VICE-PRESIDENT HOWARD SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME, AND IT'S GOOD TO SO MANY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY HERE.

UM, TODAY I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE A REALLY VALUABLE COMMUNITY PARTNER TO THE FOUNDATION BEFORE I DO.

SO I WOULD JUST LIKE TO, UM, GIVE YOU A VERY QUICK OVERVIEW OF WHAT THE FOUNDATION HAS BEEN UP TO AND HOW VALUABLE THIS COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP HAS BEEN FOR US.

SO, FIRST SLIDE, MY NAME IS KATHLEEN STARSFIELD.

I'M THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR THE EAST BATON ROUGE SCHOOL SYSTEM FOUNDATION.

AND I BROUGHT WITH ME TODAY, STEVEN LLOYD, WHO IS THE HEAD OF THE TECH PARK AND WHO IS THE CURRENT BOARD CHAIR FOR THE FOUNDATION.

WE ARE ALSO GOING TO RECOGNIZE I'M A COMMUNITY PARTNER IN A MINUTE IN A MINUTE.

SO THE FOUNDATION IS HERE TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL SYSTEM STUDENTS, UM, OF EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH.

AND, UM, I'D LIKE TO TELL YOU JUST FOR A SECOND, WHO WE ARE, WE'RE AN INDEPENDENT NONPROFIT WHOSE MISSION IS TO SUPPORT THE STUDENTS BY ACTING AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN THE DISTRICT AND THE COMMUNITY.

SO THE NEEDS OF THE DISTRICT AND MATCHING THEM UP WITH THE COMMUNITY PARTNERS WHO ARE WILLING TO STEP UP AND FILL THOSE NEEDS.

OKAY, SO THE FOUNDATION IS EIGHT YEARS OLD AND IN THE FIRST SEVEN YEARS OF ITS EXISTENCE, IT REALLY FOCUSED ON, UH, CREATING AWARENESS AROUND THE IMPORTANCE OF STEM EDUCATION AND BELIEVE IT, OR NOT SEVEN YEARS AGO, IT WASN'T VERY PROMINENTLY ACKNOWLEDGED.

AND NOW IT IS.

SO WE CONSIDER THAT A CELEBRATION AND A VICTORY IN HAVING COMPLETED THAT FIRST PHASE OF OUR MISSION.

UM, AND SO NOW SINCE MOST PEOPLE ARE AWARE OF STEM,

UM, THE FOUNDATION BOARD, UM, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF STEVEN LLOYD AND THE, UH, VOLUNTEER BOARD MEMBERS GOT TOGETHER AND CREATED A STRATEGIC PLAN THAT REALLY BROADENED THE SCOPE OF THE FOUNDATION.

SO NOW WE ARE MUCH MORE FOCUSED ON, UM, MAKING SURE THAT WE BRIDGE THE GAP WITH THE COMMUNITY AND WE DEVELOP RESOURCES ON A BROADER SCALE THROUGHOUT BATON ROUGE AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY.

SO WE'VE BEEN WORKING THIS PAST YEAR ON ENHANCING OUR ABILITY TO RECEIVE AND ALLOCATE DONATIONS FROM THE COMMUNITY, MAKING SURE THOSE MECHANISMS ARE IN PLACE, UM, AND MAKING SURE THAT WE'RE ABLE TO PUT IT WHERE IT'S NEEDED MOST AND HANDLED IN THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY POSSIBLE.

UM, NEXT SLIDE.

SO NOW WE'RE READY TO TAKE THAT TO THE NEXT LEVEL IN OUR PLANNING PHASE IN THE YEAR 2021.

SO WE PLAN TO ENGAGE REPRESENTATIVES BOTH FROM THE SCHOOL DISTRICT AND FROM THE COMMUNITY TO FIGURE OUT WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE AND HOW THAT SUPPORT WILL BEST BE SECURED.

UM, AND FROM THERE, WE'LL USE THAT INPUT TO GUIDE A WORK AND THAT WILL INCLUDE ADDING CAPACITY SO THAT WE CAN IDENTIFY AND EXECUTE THOSE PROTOCOLS THAT WE NEED TO PUT IN PLACE TO BE THE MOST EFFICIENT FUNDRAISER THAT WE CAN BE.

UM, WE'LL ALSO CONTINUE AT THAT TIME TO STRENGTHEN PARTNERSHIPS WITHIN THE DISTRICT AND WITH THE COMMUNITY.

SO AS WE INTERACT WITH PEOPLE AND BUSINESSES AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT CARE DEEPLY ABOUT PROVIDING THE BEST LEVEL OF EDUCATION, UM, FOR OUR CHILDREN AS POSSIBLE, THEY'VE OFTEN ASKED ME HOW THEY CAN HELP.

THEY SAY, KATHLEEN, WE'RE EXCITED.

WE'RE INTERESTED IN SUPPORTING THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM IN THIS PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS.

HOW CAN WE DO IT? UM, AND THAT'S REALLY THE PURPOSE OF WHY WE'RE HERE AND THAT IS TO RECOGNIZE A MODEL PARTNERSHIP THAT WE'VE DEVELOPED WITH ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS.

SO I'D LIKE TO ASK STEPHEN AND STEPHANIE TO COME UP FOR A MINUTE, PLEASE.

SO WE'RE HERE TOO.

SO WE'VE HAD TO RECOGNIZE A CASE STUDY AND THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF A COMMUNITY PARTNER IN EXXON MOBILE, BATON ROUGE.

AND SO STEPHANIE CARGILL, UM, AS THE HEAD OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS FOR EXXON BATON ROUGE, UM, HAS REALLY SPEARHEADED THE RELATIONSHIP THAT WE'VE HAD, UM, WITH THIS COMMUNITY PARTNER AND THE WAY THAT THEY'VE STEPPED UP, I THINK, UM, CAN BE HELD UP TO SHOW OTHERS HOW THEY CAN WORK THROUGH THE FOUNDATION TO ENHANCE EDUCATION.

AND ONE OF THE REALLY IMPORTANT WAYS THAT I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT WAS THAT EXXON, DURING COVID ESPECIALLY APPROACH THE FOUNDATION AND CONTINUE TO ASK HOW THE STUDENTS NEEDED TO BE SUPPORTED.

AND I CAN'T EMPHASIZE THAT ENOUGH, NOT EVERY DONOR DOES THAT.

A LOT OF DONORS SAY I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THIS HELP IN THIS FORM, UM, WHICH IS WONDERFUL, BUT EXXON WAS TRULY A CASE STUDY IN THE FACT THAT THEY LISTENED.

THEY LEARNED WHAT WE NEEDED SPECIFICALLY TO HELP FEED THE KIDS, TO CONNECT THE KIDS AND TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAD SAFE ENVIRONMENTS AND THEY STEPPED UP TO THE PLATE AND THEY DID SO ON A CONTINUOUS BASIS.

UM, ANOTHER WAY THAT THEY WERE ABLE TO ENHANCE THE PARTNERSHIP, UM, THAT ALLOWED THEM TO SUPPORT STUDENTS TO A GREATER DEGREE WAS THAT THEY WORKED DIRECTLY WITH OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM, THROUGH THE FOUNDATION, UM, TO CREATE STEM RESOURCE KIDS.

SO ONCE WE HAD THE KIDS FED, ONCE WE HAD THE KIDS CONNECTED, THEY WENT AHEAD AND CREATED, UM, A STEM SERIES OF VIDEOS THAT THEIR EMPLOYEES FILMED.

AND THEY HAVE FOLDED THAT INTO THE VIRTUAL LEARNING, UM, CADRE OF EDUCATIONAL TOOLS THAT WE HAVE, UM, AVAILABLE FOR THE VIRTUAL EDUCATION SERIES.

SO, UM, ASIDE FROM THOSE THINGS, EXXON CONTINUES TO BE A PARTNER AND, UM, AND ENHANCE THE, THE ROLE BETWEEN THE FOUNDATION AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR OUR KIDS.

AND SO, UM, I WOULD JUST LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THE WORK OF EXXON-MOBIL BATON ROUGE AS AN EXCELLENT COMMUNITY PARTNER WITH THE FOUNDATION AND THE SCHOOL DISTRICT OF VISA, BATON ROUGE PARISH.

AND WE DID LEARN A LOT FROM THEM.

UH, I THINK IT SHOWS YOUR TEAM IS VERY COMMITTED TO QUALITY, VERY COMMITTED TO EFFICIENCY.

UH, AND WE HOPE THIS IS A PAY IT FORWARD STRATEGY WHERE YOU'LL SEE MANY GOOD PROJECTS COME FROM THIS, BUT WE HAVE OUR MASTER BLACK BELT, DARCY STAFFORD, UH, WHO I WOULD LIKE HER TO MENTION TO YOU HOW THE PROGRAM ACTUALLY WORKS.

SO WHAT THEY ARE RECEIVING TONIGHT IS A LEAN SIX SIGMA GREEN BELT CERTIFICATION.

SO IF YOU GO ONLINE, YOU CAN FIND A CERTIFICATION THAT YOU CAN DO IN A WEEKEND.

AND YOU CAN TAKE A LOOK AT SOME OF THE VIDEOS AND DO IT ONLINE.

MAYBE TAKE A LITTLE, AND THEN YOU'RE CERTIFIED.

OUR PROGRAM LIKE BEN SAID, IS, IS 11 MONTHS.

IT'S VERY RIGOROUS.

SO WHAT THEY DID TO EARN THIS, THIS GREEN BELT CERTIFICATION IS THEY ATTENDED 15 DAYS OF CLASS.

AND IN BETWEEN EACH PHASE, THERE ARE FIVE PHASES OF THIS PROJECT, OF THIS PROGRAM.

THEY HAD DELIVERABLES AND THEY HAD TO GO OUT AND ACTUALLY UTILIZE THE TOOLS THEY LEARNED AND GUIDE THEIR TEAMS USING THOSE TOOLS.

AND WHAT IS SO NEAT ABOUT SIX SIGMA IS THAT YOU TAKE DATA AND YOU ANALYZE IT USING STATISTICS TO DETERMINE WHAT YOUR TRUE CAUSES OF DEFECT OR VARIATION IN YOUR PROCESS IS.

SO YOU CAN WORK ON THAT.

THAT'S REALLY THAT'S DRIVING THE VARIATION IN YOUR PROCESS.

SO YOU'RE NOT WASTING YOUR TIME WORKING ON THINGS THAT, THAT DON'T MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

SO THEY USE STATISTICAL ANALYSIS AND RANDOM DATA TO DETERMINE THAT, AND THEN THEY HAD TO PUT AN IMPROVEMENT IN PLACE.

AND THEN ONCE THEY MADE THE IMPROVEMENT, THEY HAD TO RUN ANOTHER STATISTICAL TEST TO SHOW THAT THEY MADE A STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE.

AND THIS GROUP NOT ONLY MADE A STATISTICAL DIFFERENCE, AND WE ALWAYS SET VERY LOFTY GOALS.

THEY MET THEIR GOAL AND THEY EXCEEDED THEIR GOAL.

SO THEY THEY'RE THE OVERACHIEVERS.

AND THEY ALWAYS FINISHED ON TIME.

AND BETWEEN THE HURRICANES AND THE COVID, WE HAD, WE HAD TO PUSH OFF TRAINING AND WE EVEN, WE JUST STOPPED ALL WORK FOR THREE WEEKS.

AT ONE POINT, THEY REALLY MADE A GREAT IMPACT ON THIS PROJECT.

AND THEN THE FINAL COMPONENT OF IT WAS TAKING AN EXAM, A FOUR HOUR EXAM, AND THEY ALL PASSED THAT.

SO THEY DID A GREAT JOB.

THIS IS A RIGOROUS PROGRAM.

IT WAS WONDERFUL, HAVING THEM ALL.

I LOVE WORKING WITH THEM AND I LOOK FORWARD TO ACTUALLY, UM, WORKING WITH THE NEXT GROUP, DEFINITELY JOINED US AT THE END WHEN, UH, DR.

TIMO HAD MOVED ON.

AND SO SHE WILL BE RECEIVING AND BEING HER YELLOW BELT, WHICH IS A LITTLE BIT LOWER LEVEL, BUT IT'S MORE OF AWARENESS AND SIMULATION.

SO SHE'LL RECEIVE THAT.

SO WITHOUT ANY FURTHER ADO, I'LL GO AHEAD AND WE'LL PRESENT THESE AWARDS.

AND, UM, THERE'S, SHE ACTUALLY LIVED IN AFRICA FOR A MINUTE AND, UM, HAD SOME AMAZING EXPERIENCES, AS YOU ALL KNOW, WE DO DO THE TUTORING AND SUPPORT FOR LITERACY INTERVENTION FOR ELEMENTARY AGE STUDENTS, BUT WE ALSO DO SOME AMAZING CREATIVE PARTNERSHIPS.

AND THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THEM, UH, WITH THE INTENTION TO EXPOSE STUDENTS TO THINGS THAT THEY OTHERWISE WOULD NOT EXPERIENCE IN THEIR OWN COMMUNITIES, UM, AND TRADITIONAL ACADEMIC, UH, CURRICULUM.

UM, SO WE HAVE THESE PARTNERSHIPS THAT COME INTO THE SCHOOLS AND MEET WITH THE STUDENTS AND, UM, UH, GIVE THEM EXPERIENCE THAT WILL INSPIRE AND EDUCATE AND HOPEFULLY INSTILL SOME INSPIRATION IN THEM.

AND THIS IS A PRIME EXAMPLE OF ONE OF THOSE, AND WE ARE JUST SO PLEASED TO HAVE DR.

GILBERT TO HAVE COME ALL THE WAY FROM SOUTHEASTERN UNIVERSITY LOUISIANA UNIVERSITY TO TELL US ABOUT HER PROJECT.

UM, I'VE SPENT MOST OF MY TIME IN THE FIELD.

UM, AND SO I, I BRING ARTIFACTS WITH ME HERE.

YOU'RE GONNA HAVE SOME SHOW AND TELL, UM, SOME OF MY STUDENTS, MY COLLEGE STUDENTS ARE TAKING AN UPPER LEVEL CLASS.

THAT'S A REAL WORLD READY CLASS.

SO IT'S AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING CLASS, IT'S ANTHROPOLOGY, BUT FOCUSING ON CULTURE AND THE ENVIRONMENT AND IN PARTICULAR HUMAN WILDLIFE CONFLICT.

SO WE THINK ABOUT THAT IN TERMS OF, YEAH, AFRICA, THE LION KING, YOU KNOW, IT'S VERY GLOBAL, BUT WE WANT TO ALSO BRING IT HOME AND ADDRESS THIS AS LOCAL ISSUES.

SO BASED ON MY EXPERIENCE, UM, WE, WITH MY STUDENTS PUT TOGETHER THIS CURRICULUM ABOUT CONSERVATION AND ABOUT, UM, IN PARTICULAR, LARGE CAT CONSERVATION AND LOOKING AT HOW PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN AREAS WHERE THERE ARE CATS, HOW THEY HAVE TO GET ALONG, SO THAT COEXISTENCE, AND IN DEVELOPING THIS CURRICULUM, THEN WE WERE ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER, UM, UH, LESSONS ABOUT GEOGRAPHY.

SO LOOKING AT AFRICA, YOU KNOW, WHERE IS AFRICA, HOW DO YOU, UM, FIND AFRICA, WHERE IS AFRICA RELATED TO, UM, BATON ROUGE, FOR EXAMPLE? SO THAT WAS REALLY AN INTERESTING LESSON.

AND ONE, I THINK OUR YOUNG SCHOLARS THAT MARY DALE, UH, REALLY LEARNED A LOT ABOUT JUST GLOBAL GEOGRAPHY, UM, THEN ALSO ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT, THE HABITAT, DIFFERENT TYPES OF ECOSYSTEMS, AND THEN ANIMAL BEHAVIOR, AND THEN ALSO CULTURE.

SO WHO ARE THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN EAST AFRICA AND ARE LIVING NEXT TO LIONS AND LEOPARDS AND, AND BIG ANIMALS LIKE THAT.

AND THEN THE IDEA IS TO BRING IT HOME.

SO WHAT TYPE OF ANIMALS, FOR EXAMPLE, DO YOU COME INTO CONTACT WITH IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOODS, IN YOUR YARDS? SO WE'RE TRYING TO DEVELOP THAT AWARENESS OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND THEN ALSO THE AWARENESS OF CONSERVATION.

SO I JUST WANTED TO, TO SHOW YOU A COUPLE OF THE PROJECTS THAT WE, WE DID, AND WE WERE, UM, CUT SHORT BY THE PANDEMIC, BUT, UM, SOME JUST SIMPLE ART PROJECTS, BUT THE CHILDREN REALLY ENJOYED THE, SO JUST LIKE LITTLE STYLIZED LIONS, BECAUSE OUR FOCUS REALLY WAS ON LYONS.

UM, AND THEN THE, UH, THE CULTURE THERE IS THE, THE MESSIAH CULTURE.

YOU MAY BE FAMILIAR WITH THEM.

SO, UH, THE, OUR YOUNG SCHOLARS, WE'RE GOING TO MAKE THESE, UM, TYPES OF MESSIAH NECKLACES OUT OF BEADS.

SO, UH, WE HAD ALL THESE PROJECTS LINED UP AND THEN OUR HOME AND EATING EXPERIENCE WAS TO, UM, SET UP A PEN PAL.

UH, WE'RE A NATIONAL CIVIC ORGANIZATION, BUT THIS IS A LOCAL PROJECT THAT WE STARTED OFF FIRST YEAR IN BATON ROUGE.

UM, NOT KNOWING THAT NEW TEACHERS, ALL THE TEACHERS TAKE MONEY OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS TO PURCHASE MATERIALS THAT THEY USE IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. SO, UM, A COUPLE OF THINGS I WANT TO MENTION, AND THEN WE'LL GET INTO THE SLIDE PRESENTATION.

UM, ANYONE WHO'S FAMILIAR WITH THE JEWISH TRADITION, THE JEWISH HOLIDAY OF PASSOVER AND THE PASSOVER SAIDA KNOWS THAT THERE'S AN IMPORTANT QUESTION ASKED EVERY YEAR, WHY IS THIS NIGHT DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER NIGHTS? AND I GUESS IT WOULD BE APPROPRIATE AT THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING TO ASK WHY IS THIS YEAR

DIFFERENT FROM ALL OF THE YEARS? THE PANDEMIC HAS CERTAINLY AFFECTED EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS AT EVERY LEVEL, FROM PRESCHOOL THROUGH, UH, PHDS IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS, EVERYBODY HAS HAD TO ADAPT TO THE TECHNOLOGY THAT WAS NEEDED TO THE HYBRID CLASSROOMS AND NEW TEACHERS HAVE ENOUGH STRESS THEIR FIRST YEAR.

UH, THEY'RE NERVOUS.

THEY'RE WORRIED, THEY'RE TRYING TO GET ORGANIZED.

THEY DON'T HAVE THE RESOURCES THEY NEED, BUT THEN ADD A PANDEMIC LIKE THIS PAST YEAR AND THE STRESS LEVEL JUST SKYROCKETS.

AND, UH, EVERYBODY HAS BEEN ADAPTING, BUT IN MEETING SOME OF THOSE TEACHERS THIS PAST WEEKEND, AND I'LL EXPLAIN IN A MOMENT, UH, SINCE WE COULDN'T INVITE THEM HERE TO THE SCHOOL BOARD, WE MET WITH, UH, MANY OF THEM AT SCHOOL AIDS OVER THE WEEKEND.

AND IN TALKING TO THEM, UH, I'M JUST HOPING THAT THIS PROJECT THIS YEAR HELPS SOME OF THEM, UH, PREVENTING EARLY BURNOUT, EARLY PROFESSIONAL BURNOUT.

MANY OF THEM JUST IN LISTENING TO HOW STRESSED THEY WERE, HOPEFULLY THE MONEY THAT WE HAVE GIVEN THEM WILL, UH, ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE FINANCIAL BURDEN THAT THEY HAVE, BUT ALSO GIVE THEM SOME EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TO KNOW THAT THE COMMUNITY CARES ABOUT THEM, THAT WE ARE TRYING TO HELP THEM AS BEST THAT WE CAN.

SO, UH, THE EXCHANGE CLUB, AS I SAID, THIS IS OUR 24TH, UH, YEAR THE EXCHANGE CLUB.

THIS IS NOW OUR 25TH YEAR.

SO WE'VE HAD 24 YEARS AS A CLUB IN BATON ROUGE, BUT 109 YEARS NATIONALLY WHEN THE FIRST EXCHANGE CLUB FORMED IN 1911 IN DETROIT, MICHIGAN, A GROUP OF BUSINESSMEN EXCHANGING IDEAS TO BETTER THEIR COMMUNITY.

OKAY.

IF YOU'LL GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE IN 24 YEARS WITH THE 21 TEACHERS THAT WE ARE ADOPTING THIS YEAR, WE WILL HAVE GIVEN GRANTS IN THE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND SEVERAL HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO 593 NEW TEACHERS.

AND IF THAT NUMBER SOUNDS LIKE A LOT TO YOU IMAGINE 23 YEARS AGO, OUR FIRST YEAR, THIS IS THE 24TH YEAR WHEN WE HAD FIVE TEACHERS IN THE BACK ROOM AT THE SCHOOL BOARD.

AND WE THOUGHT IT WAS A ONE-TIME PROJECT WHEN WE GAVE A LITTLE BIT OF MONEY TO FIVE NEW TEACHERS.

AND NOW WE HAVE ACTUALLY GIVEN GRANTS TO 593 TEACHERS THE MOST COMMON, UH, THANK YOU THAT THEY, UH, THEY GIVE US, INCLUDES THE WORD, WHAT A BLESSING TO HAVE THAT EXTRA MONEY WE'VE REACHED 68 DIFFERENT SCHOOLS.

AND WE ARE APPROACHING A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS, UH, IN, IN GRANTS TO THESE TEACHERS.

SO, UH, USUALLY WE HAVE SEVERAL EXCHANGE CLUB MEMBERS COME TO THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING EVERY YEAR, BUT, UM, WE WERE LIMITED.

SO SEVERAL OF THEM MET, UH, THIS PAST SATURDAY AT SCHOOL AIDS.

AND THERE ARE SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THE EXCHANGE CLUB.

AND THEY WOULD TOLD THAT WAS THE FIRST INSTALLMENT.

UM, ALSO OLDER PEOPLE, UH, MAYBE MANY OF THE PARENTS OF THESE KIDS, MAYBE MANY OF YOU, YOU, I DON'T WANT TO LOOK AT ANYONE WHEN I SAY OLDER PEOPLE, BUT, UH, I'M NOT LOOKING AT YOU, JILL.

AND, UM, IT WAS, I KNEW WITH THAT DIAGNOSIS THAT, UM, THAT IS A REAL CHALLENGE BECAUSE MY FATHER HAD PASSED AWAY WHEN I WAS 17 WITH THE SAME.

SO HE WENT AND JUST CARRIED ON WITH HIS LIFE TO THE FULLEST.

HE, UM, I KNOW WE ARE, I ASKED CONVERSATION, HE WAS IN FLORIDA AND HE HAD FAMILY COMING AND HIS SIBLINGS AND CHILDREN AND THEY ALL GATHERED.

AND, UM, THEN, YOU KNOW, I, I WATCHED THE PROCESS AS HE WAS CONTINUING TO, UH, DO THE WORK THAT HE WAS SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

UM, CUTTING TREES AND, UM, SPENDING TIME AT THE BEACH, VISITING SWAMPS, SETTING UP CAMP ON HIS FRONT PORCH, UM, WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND TELLING STORIES.

AND I TOOK THAT AWAY FROM KNOLL AT THE TIME.

AND WE WERE AS A DISTRICT IN A, IN THE LONGEST RUNNING DESEG SEAT IN THE NATION AT THAT POINT.

AND I JOINED THE CHAIN OF A SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WHO WORKED TIRELESSLY, UM, TO BRING ABOUT SOME, UH, AND TO THAT FEDERAL OVERSIGHT AND CONTROL.

AND WE AS A BOARD, ALONG WITH THE COMMUNITY, KNEW THAT WE NEEDED TO GET THIS DONE AND NEEDED TO GET IT RIGHT.

AND WE DID.

AND WE WORKED THROUGH MEDIATION IN FEDERAL COURT DAY AFTER DAY, AND IT WAS QUITE THE COMMUNITY ENDEAVOR.

THE BOARD WAS JOINED BY TO MEET OTHER COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS LEADERS.

AND WE WORKED THROUGH ISSUES AND WE, WE MEDIATED AND WE TALKED AND IT WAS JUST A HEALTHY TIME.

AND WE AS A BOARD TRULY BONDED AS A FAMILY BECAUSE, UH, WE SPENT SO MUCH TIME TOGETHER AND IT WAS SO HEARTFELT AND IT WAS HARD, PASSIONATE WORK THAT WE WERE DOING.

AND, UM, IT WAS JUST A PIVOTAL TIME, I BELIEVE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND DEFINITELY IN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.

SO WE COULD STOP SPENDING AS MUCH ON LEGAL FEES AND THOSE KINDS OF THINGS, AND, AND BETTER SPEND THE DOLLARS TOWARDS EDUCATING THE STUDENTS.

UM, NO GREW UP ON MOUNT HOPE, UH, PLANTATION ON HIGHLAND ROAD.

AND THAT WAS AN INTERESTING BOY HOOD I'M SURE.

UM, HE BEGAN TEACHING SOCIAL STUDIES, UM, IN 1984 AT KENILWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL.

AND, UH, HE WENT ON TO WORK TOWARDS HIS MASTER'S AND WORK TOWARDS HIS, UH, DOCTORATE IN CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION AT LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY.

SO HE, HE TAUGHT MULTIPLE COURSES AT LSU IN THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION.

UM, HE, AGAIN, LIKE I SAID, TRIMMING TREES, CUTTING TREES, EVERYTHING WITH A PASSION, HE WAS ELECTED TO THE EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH SCHOOL BOARD IN 1994.

AND HE SERVED THROUGH 2010.

SO IN HIS TIME HE, UH, MADE DEFINITE IMPACTS ON THE EDUCATION OF OUR STUDENTS.

HE WAS, UH, AT ONE POINT THE PRESIDENT OF THE LOUISIANA SCHOOL BOARDS ASSOCIATION, UM, AS WELL.

AND HE JOINED IN 2010 WHEN HE LEFT OUR SCHOOL BOARD, HE JOINED THE CO-OP KIWANIS CLUB OF BATON ROUGE DOWNTOWN, WHERE HE THEN WENT ON TO BECOME A LEADER IN THAT ORGANIZATION AS WELL.

BUT, UH, ONE OF HIS BIGGEST PRIDE AND JOY WAS IN A BOOK PROJECT.

HE CREATED ENTITLED REINFORCING THE REWARDS OF READING TO BUILD A BETTER BATON ROUGE, THREE YARDS FOR, FOR THREE BR.

AND I REMEMBER THE DAYS THAT,

UM, HE SHARED THOSE EXPERIENCES WITH US.

SO I KNOW THAT WE ALL, UM, APPRECIATE ALL THAT HE DID AND THE IMPACT THAT HE MADE IN HIS LIFE.

UM, AND, AND CAN, SO MANY OF HIS PROJECTS CONTINUE TO, UM, BENEFIT THE STUDENTS IN, IN THINGS THAT ARE GOING TO BE CARRIED ON THROUGH THE YEARS.

IF IT'S A SMALL AREA, SAY A CLASSROOM, WE LOCKED THAT ROOM DOWN FOR 24 HOURS.

AND THEN WE GO IN AND SANITIZE THAT AREA AND CLEAN IT, UH, BEFORE ANYONE CAN RE-ENTER MR. SMITH SHOWED YOU SOME PICTURES OF THE STAFF, UH, USING THE ELECTROSTATIC SPRAYERS THAT WE HAVE PURCHASED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, THERE WERE SUGGESTIONS TO BUY SPRAYERS.

WE HAD TO DO SOME RESEARCH.

WE HAD TO WORK MR. SHAMBLIN AND, AND LEGAL TO, UH, MESH THE CONCERNS THAT OUR CORPORATE PARTNERS AT ARAMARK HAD IN, UH, SOME OF THEIR, UH, DEVELOPMENT.

IF THEY'RE AT THEIR OFFICES, MAIN OFFICES ABOUT THE USE OF THESE SPRAYERS, WE GOT THE SPECS, WORKED OUT THE SPRAYERS THAT WE'RE USING, THE, THE, UH, QUANTITIES OF LIQUID.

WE USE THE NO SPRAYERS.

ALL OF THAT, UH, LIQUID IS BIODEGRADABLE.

THERE ARE NO HARSH CHEMICALS IN IT AT ALL.

SO WE HAD ALL THAT WORKED OUT.

WE HAVE RAMPED UP OUR PURCHASE OF THOSE SPRAYERS.

SO WHEN WE GET TO THESE NOTICES, WE, THE PRINCIPALS NOTIFY US.

UH, MS. HAS DONE A GREAT JOB WITH THE NURSES ABOUT NOTIFYING PARENTS.

WHEN WE HAVE AN OUTBREAK, WHO'S BEEN, UH, A CONTACT OR A CONTACT OF A CONTACT, DEPENDING ON THOSE CATEGORIES, THEN WE, UH, USE OUR ENHANCED CLEANING METHODS.

AND, UH, SO FAR, UM, WE BELIEVE THAT OUR STAFF, THE TEACHERS AND THE PRINCIPALS HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB, UH, AS WAS MENTIONED IN THE PRESENTATION ABOUT THE TEACHER GRANTS, THE STRESS THAT OUR STAFFS ARE UNDER AT THE SCHOOLS IS VERY, VERY HEAVY.

THEY, THEY, THEY ARE BEARING THE BRUNT OF THIS WORK EVERY DAY, TRYING TO INSTRUCT OUR STUDENTS.

THEY HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB IN IMPLEMENTING THESE PROCEDURES WITH HAND SANITIZER MASKS, TEMPERATURE CHECKS EVERY DAY, AND IS BECAUSE OF THEM AND THEIR DEDICATION THAT WE'RE STILL IN SCHOOL NOW.

AND WE HAVE A VERY LOW INCIDENT RATE IN OUR SCHOOLS.

MOST OF THE CASES WE'VE COME ACROSS IN OUR DISTRICT HAVE BEEN ADULTS BRINGING, UH, THE VIRUS BACK INTO THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS. AND AS A COMMUNITY, AS THE GOVERNOR HIGHLIGHTED TODAY ON HIS PRESS CONFERENCE, WE ALL HAVE TO REDEDICATE OURSELVES TO WEARING THESE MASKS, WHICH ARE SOMEWHAT OF A NUISANCE, BUT ARE FOR THE PUBLIC GOOD.

AND WE'VE GOT TO RE EMPHASIZE TO PEOPLE HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS, AND, UH, WITH EVERYONE'S COOPERATION AND WITH THE SUPPORT THAT THE BOARD HAS GIVEN US AND LEADERSHIP FROM MR. SMITH AND MS. NEW PREY AND MS. AND MR. NIKKEI'S, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO FEND OFF THIS VIRUS AND KEEP INSTRUCTION GOING.

WHEN WAS IT REPORTED? WHAT WAS THE CLOSEOUT SO THAT WE CAN FACILITATE AND ADVOCATE FOR AN EFFECTIVE CONVERSATION? CAUSE I STILL KNOW THAT PEOPLE, UM, HAVE A LOT OF CONCERNS RELATED TO COVID-19 AND I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE WHAT WE'RE PUTTING OUT HERE AT THIS MEETING IS WHAT'S ACTUALLY HAPPENING WITH THE PRACTICE.

UM, AND AS FAR AS, UM, THAT WENT, IT WAS A VERY EXCITING MORNING AND AFTERNOON WHERE, UH, 250 K-12 AND COLLEGE STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS ATTENDED THE DAY OF DIALOGUE ON RACE AND EDUCATION, WHICH WAS SPONSORED BY DIALOGUE ON RACE, HUMANITIES, AMPED AND SERVE LOUISIANA OF THE 250 ATTENDEES.

THERE WERE SEVEN EBR, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS JOINED WITH THEIR STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE DAY.

UM, THE THREE ORGANIZATIONS WILL PUBLISH SOME SELECTED VIDEOS FROM THE DAY ONCE THEY ARE EDITED, INCLUDING THE PANEL WITH, UM, DR.

UH, FIRST AND FOREMOST, THIS IMPACTS NO CURRENT EMPLOYEES, BOTH OF THESE, UH, ITEMS, UH, COME INTO EFFECT JANUARY 1ST OF 2021.

SO NO ONE WHO IS AN EMPLOYEE IS IMPACTED BY THIS AT ALL.

AND IT REALLY THE, THE, THE RESULT OF THESE WE'LL BRING OUR RETIREE VESTING BENEFITS MORE IN LINE, UH, WITH SURROUNDING PARISHES AND THE OFFICE OF GROUP BENEFITS.

AND, UM, THERE WILL BE NO MONEY SAVINGS FROM THIS FOR AT LEAST FIVE YEARS, BECAUSE THAT'S THE PEOPLE WHO, UH, WHO ARE ALREADY IN THE SYSTEM, WHICH STILL BE UNDER THE OLD SYSTEM.

BUT THIS IS JUST A FIRST STEP OF TRYING TO, UH, REALLY BETTER ALIGN OURSELVES, UH, WITH THE COMPETITIVE MARKET AND BEING THAT IT'S A POLICY OF THE BOARD.

IF TWO, THREE YEARS DOWN THE ROAD, WE SEE THAT THIS IS NOT WORKING.

WE CAN ALWAYS DIAL IT BACK CAUSE NO ONE EVER COMPLAINS ABOUT HAVING BENEFITS INCREASED, BUT WE WILL NOT DECREASE ANY BENEFITS FOR, FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE IN THERE.

SO, UH, I HOPE YOU WILL CONSIDER MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS WHO WILL CONSIDER, UH, THESE POLICIES, UH, MORE AS A MEANS TO TRY TO HAVE MONEY AVAILABLE FOR SALARY INCREASES AND STUDENT POPULATION, UH, EXPENDITURES AS WE GO FORWARD.

AND I STILL THINK THAT WITH THE WAY THAT TEACHING IS GOING WITH THE MOST OF THE NOVICE TEACHER ENTERING THE PROFESSION THROUGH OUR ALTERNATIVE CERTIFICATION ROUTE, UM, IT, IT'S STILL SOMETHING THAT, UM, BRINGS OR GIVES ME PAUSE BECAUSE I KNOW THAT A VESTING YEAR OF 20 AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR IS JUST UNHEARD OF.

AND SO WHEN WE WERE THINKING ABOUT TAKING, UM, NEW TEACHERS FROM THE PRIVATE SECTOR, IT'S, TO ME, SOMETHING THAT COULD PUT US AT A DISADVANTAGE.

UM, SO I STILL HAVE THOSE SAME CONCERNS ABOUT INCREASING THE AMOUNT OF VESTING YEARS, UM, FOR TEACHERS, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUNGER TEACHERS.

UM, THERE WAS A REPORT RECENTLY RE REDUCED ON A RELEASE BY THE EDUCATION, ONE OF THE EDUCATION GROUPS.

AND ONE OF THE THINGS THAT THEY ACTUALLY ENCOURAGE THE DISTRICT TO DO WAS LOWER THE AMOUNT OF VESTING YEARS TO REALLY GET OUR ROUTINE RETAINING AND RECRUITING A HIGH, UH, HOW WE QUALIFY OUR LEVEL OF TEACHERS.

SO, UM, IT STILL GIVES ME PAUSE ON, I APPRECIATE THE, THE WORK MR. GODADDY ON, ON TRYING TO GET US TO A BETTER PLACE TO HAVE, UM, ADDITIONAL RESOURCES, BUT, UM, IT, IT STILL GIVES ME SOME CONCERN.
