UM, YOU KNOW, AS YOU KNOW, IT'S BEEN VERY, VERY DIFFICULT DURING THIS TIME FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE REGARDING COVID, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ANXIOUS AND DEPRESSED.

AND SO WE'RE JUST HERE TO OFFER A HELPING HAND IN THAT SITUATION.

I'M HOPING A LOT OF PEOPLE TRYING TO COME AND RELAX THEIR MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT.

I'M HOPING THEY'RE JUST COME OUT AND ENJOY WHAT WE HAVE TO, YOU KNOW, PREPARE IT FOR THEM.

AND JUST TO KIND OF GIVE PEOPLE A BREAK FROM REALITY, I'LL SAY, YOU KNOW, LET'S JUST, LET'S JUST COME OUT AND JUST RELAX AND SUE OURSELVES ON SOOTHING SATURDAY.

WE ARE HERE TOO.

IF THE COMMUNITY KNOW THAT BIG BUDDY IS HERE AND WE ARE WORKING ON, UM, A NEW INITIATIVE, UH, TALENT FROM THE TALENT, FROM WHERE WE, UM, ARE WORKING TO, UH, GET STUDENTS WHO ARE IN TRUANCY, UH, SITUATIONS BECAUSE OF COVID, UH, AND BECAUSE OF VIRTUAL SCHOOL.

SO WE HAVE A NEW PROGRAM, THIS IS A QUICK FLYER ABOUT IT.

UM, AND WE WANT THE STUDENTS TO, YOU KNOW, GET BACK CONNECTED TO SCHOOLS, COME IN AND, UH, WE CAN PROVIDE RESOURCES FOR THEM IN ORDER TO GET THEM BACK ON TRACK AND HAVE A BETTER CONNECTION WITH, UH, THE SCHOOL.

THIS IS EXCITING FOR ME TO SEE THAT THE RESOURCES ARE HERE TO HELP, UH, THE COMMUNITY INTERNATIONAL.

WE ARE IN THEIR FIRST EVER PRICE PRICE, BATTERY FAIR RESIDENCE, TWO YEARS IN THE BOAT.

HERE'S MOM NETWORK IS A NONPROFIT THAT CONNECTS FAMILIES WITH RESOURCES.

OUR BIGGEST INITIATIVE RIGHT NOW IS WE DO HAVE A FOOD PANTRY BOX DELIVERY SERVICES TO FAMILIES THAT HAVE LOW INCOME AND DON'T HAVE ENOUGH FOOD TO MEET THEIR NEEDS.

UM, SO I HAVE A NETWORK OF MOMS VOLUNTEERS THROUGHOUT, UM, ZACHARY BAKER, BATON ROUGE, PRAIRIEVILLE AND DENHAM SPRINGS.

THAT HELPS ME DELIVER BOXES TO FAMILIES WITHOUT TRANSPORTATION.

AND THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT IS WE DO A LOT OF MENTAL HEALTH AND PARENTING EDUCATION AND HAVE A RESOURCE WEBSITE WHERE YOU CAN GO AND FIND, UM, PLACES TO GET COUNSELING, UM, MENTAL HEALTH, UH, WEBSITES AND, UM, UH, WORKSHEETS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.

SO A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS FOR PARENTS.

I HOPE TO SEE A LOT OF HEALING.

I HOPE TO SEE A LOT OF PEOPLE ENGAGING AND LEARNING MORE ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH AND DE-STIGMATIZING MENTAL HEALTH, AND COMING TOGETHER AS A COMMUNITY TO REALLY SUPPORT EACH OTHER AND, AND GETTING WHAT YOU NEED AND BEING HEALTHY AND YOUR MIND .

WE HELP TO PROVIDE THOSE IN NEED WITH ESSENTIAL ITEMS, SUCH AS TOILETRIES, UM, EVERYDAY HOUSEHOLD SUPPLIES, AND PRETTY MUCH ANYTHING THAT THE PERSON MAY BE IN NEED OF IS REALLY A GREAT FEELING TO SEE HOW THE SMALLEST THINGS PEOPLE MAY TAKE FOR GRANTED IS REALLY A GOOD FEELING TO SEE HOW HAPPY IT MAKES THEM TO RECEIVE SOMETHING SUCH AS TOILET, PAPER, OR PAPER TOWELS, DEODORANT, UM, SANITARY NAPKINS,

TOOTHPASTE, TOOTHBRUSH, DIAPERS, TO SEE THE SMILE ON THEIR FACES IS WHAT BRINGS ME JOY.

AND, UM, WHEN I FOUNDED THE ORGANIZATION, MY PARTNER AND I, I DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD GROW TO THE CAPACITY THAT IT HAS GROWN, BUT PEOPLE DO UNDERSTAND AND SEE THAT WE'RE DOING GREAT WORK AND IT IS A NEED FOR IT MORE NOW THAN EVER.

UM, THE ORGANIZATION WAS FOUNDED IN 2018 AND WE HAVE GROWN AND WE'RE BECOMING MORE KNOWN AND KNOWN AS, UM, WE HAVE DIFFERENT EVENTS, BUT I HOPE THAT PEOPLE WILL UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR THE SMALLER THINGS AS WELL.

BOTH PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY INDIVIDUALS HAVE BEEN FACED WITH VARIOUS CRISIS, WHETHER IT'S BEEN DRAMATIC PRICES WITH THE WEATHER, THE STORMS, THE NUMBER OF STORMS WE'VE HAD, OR IT COULD JUST BE DEALING WITH COVID.

BUT ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, WE DEAL WITH FAMILY DEMANDS.

WE DEAL WITH DEMANDS FROM OUR HOMES, OUR PARENTS, CHILDREN, AND THEN RUNNING A THOUSAND ERRANDS.

I JUST WANT TO SHARE ONE QUICK THING WITH YOU.

HOW DO YOU TAKE A BREAK WHEN YOU WANT TO HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH? GREAT MOMENT.

WE KNOW WHAT THE COMMUNITY IS GOING THROUGH.

THEY'RE CERTAINLY AWARE OF THAT.

AND SO TODAY, NOT ONLY ARE WE WELCOMING YOU HERE, BUT WE'RE WELCOMING OUR PARTNERS WHO HELPED PUT ON THIS EVENT.

AND THESE ARE PARTNERS WHO WORK EVERY DAY TO SERVE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO ARE EXPERIENCING MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND TRAUMA.

AFTER WEEKS OF RAINY, UGLY WEATHER AND FLOODING, WHICH IS A TRAUMATIC EXPERIENCE, BUT ANY, AND EVERYONE WHO GOES THROUGH IT, WE ARE BLESSED TODAY WITH THIS BEAUTIFUL SUNNY DAY.

AND WE'RE ABLE TO GATHER, TO DISCUSS AND ACTIVATE THE RESOURCES THAT ARE AVAILABLE RIGHT HERE IN BATON ROUGE, AS IT RELATES TO TRAUMA, RESILIENCY AND COMMUNITIES AFTER STRESS AND TRAUMA OR RECAST.

BATON ROUGE IS A GRANT FROM SANSA THAT WAS AWARDED TO THE CITY OF BATON ROUGE FOUR YEARS AGO BECAUSE OF THE LEADERSHIP OF MAYOR ROOM'S ADMINISTRATION.

WE SOUGHT OUT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE TO BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THE COMMUNAL TRAUMA THAT HAD BEEN EXPERIENCED BY MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY AFTER THE SUMMER OF 2016.

MANY OF YOU CAN REMEMBER OUR SUMMER OF 2016 BECAUSE IT REFLECTS SO MUCH OF WHAT'S HAPPENING NATIONALLY.

IN TERMS OF SPAWNING MORE TRAUMA THAT'S RECOGNIZED AND EXPERIENCED ON A COMMUNAL LEVEL.

WE HAD THE DEATH OF OULTON STERLING AND YOU'LL NOTICE I DIDN'T USE A DIFFERENT DESCRIPTOR.

I SIMPLY SAID THE DEPTH OF ALTON STERLING.

WE HAD THE DEATHS OF

THREE LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS, AND WE HAD A FLOOD THAT DIDN'T AFFECT A COMMUNITY OR A PARISH, BUT A MULTI PARISH EXPERIENCE THAT COMPLETELY SENT SO MANY THOUSANDS OF OUR NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS AND FAMILY INTO A STATE OF BEING UNSHELTERED.

THAT DOESN'T COUNT THE GRIEF THAT YOU DEAL WITH ON A DAILY BASIS, THE LOSS THAT YOU DEAL WITH ON A DAILY BASIS, THE CHALLENGES THAT YOU HAVE IN SIMPLY EXISTING IN AMERICA TODAY, THAT THOSE WERE THE THINGS THAT OUR COMMUNITY HAD TO BAND TOGETHER.

AND WE WERE REELING FROM THE RESULTS OF THAT, AND WE NEEDED SOMETHING TO BE ABLE TO ADDRESS.

AND WE WERE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEND OUT A CALL FOR THOSE WHO WERE WORKING, PROVIDING CLINICAL SERVICES, PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR THOSE WHO HAD EXPERIENCED TRAUMA TRAUMA, THAT, THAT THING THAT HAPPENS IN YOUR LIFE, THAT LEAVES YOU A LITTLE LESS WELL OFF THAN YOU ARE MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY, SOMETIMES PHYSICALLY, BECAUSE WE KNOW UNADDRESSED TRAUMA WILL SOMETIMES MANIFEST IN PHYSICAL ISSUES IN OUR BODIES, BUT THE TRAUMA THAT HAD BEEN EXPERIENCED IN HOW WE WERE GOING TO DEAL WITH IT.

AND AS A RESULT OVER THE LAST FOUR YEARS, WE HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF WORKING WITH A COALITION, ALL PROVIDERS AND INDIVIDUALS IN THIS COMMUNITY THAT REACH THOUSANDS OF OUR CITIZENS, OUR AT-RISK AND VULNERABLE YOUTH, OUR SENIORS, OUR HOMELESS COMMUNITY, OUR UNSHELTERED COMMUNITY, THOSE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES AND ALL OF THE THINGS THAT TAKE PLACE ON A DAILY BASIS, MULTIPLE GROUPS COMING TOGETHER TO SAY, OKAY, I TELL YOU I CAN DO A HEALING CIRCLE WITH THE YOU.

WELL, I CAN DO A BINGO WITH THE SENIORS.

WE HAVE CLINICIANS WHO CAN PROVIDE THERAPY AND NO ONE CLAIMING A PARTICULAR SILO OR TERRITORY, BUT RATHER WORKING COLLABORATIVELY AND THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING ABLE TO STEP BACK AND JUST FACILITATE THE INTERACTION OF THESE GROUPS.

AND MR. GESELL HAS ALREADY NAMED A FEW THAT ARE HERE TODAY, BUT KNOW THAT THERE ARE TENS MORE, THAT EXISTS THAT WORK UNDER THIS PROGRAM AND THROUGH THIS PROGRAM EVERY DAY, BECAUSE WE RECOGNIZE THAT MENTAL HEALTH AND THE ISSUES SURROUNDING MENTAL WELLNESS IS THE NEXT MAJOR THING THAT THIS NATION IS GOING TO HAVE TO ADDRESS.

IF THE PEN DIMMICK DIDN'T EXPOSE SOME OF THE INEQUITIES NOT JUST INSTALLED WHERE YOU LIVE, WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE A JOB, UM, ARE YOU ABLE TO SUSTAIN, BUT ALSO DO YOU HAVE ACCESS TO SERVICES THAT HELP YOU COPE WITH EVERY DAY LIFE? AND THAT'S WHAT WE DO.

AND THAT'S WHY I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE GRIEF EXPERIENCE TODAY, BECAUSE THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT IT IS DEALING WITH.

GRIEF, MANAGING GRIEF.

IT'S A JOURNEY LIKE LIFE IS A JOURNEY WORKING THROUGH YOUR GRIEF IS A JOURNEY.

HOW MANY OF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED GRIEF IN THE LAST YEAR, THE LAST SIX MONTHS, THE LAST MONTH, THE LAST WEEK, IT'S AN ONGOING PROCESS.

SO THE CHALLENGE IS NOT THAT IF YOU EXPERIENCE

THE CHALLENGES, IF YOU BELIEVE IN YOURSELF ENOUGH TO WORK THROUGH THE GRIEF AND SURVIVE.

SO I'M GOING TO DEFINE GRIEF AS YOUR EMOTIONAL RESPONSE TO A LOSS IN YOUR LIFE.

THE BEAUTY OF GRIEVING IS THAT AS THE GREENVILLE, YOU DETERMINE THE VALUE OF THE LOSS.

THAT VALUE MAY NOT RESONATE THE SAME WITH SOMEONE ELSE.

WHAT YOU DETERMINED ABOUT THE LOSS? THE THING WE HAVE TO RECOGNIZE IS THAT GRIEVING IS A NATURAL PART OF LIFE.

IT'S A PART OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE.

AND IF YOU HAVEN'T EXPERIENCED LOSS YET, OR YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE IN GRIEF, JUST PEOPLE LIVING A LITTLE WHILE LONGER, AND I PROMISE YOU, WE'RE RECOGNIZED NOW, GRIEVING IS SOMETHING THAT'S VERY CHALLENGING SOMETIMES TO RECOGNIZE, TO NEGOTIATE.

SOMETIMES IT LASTS A LOT LONGER THAN WE WANT IT TO LAST.

I CHALLENGE YOU TO BE PATIENT WITH YOURSELF AND GO THROUGH THE PROCESS, OR EVEN AS UNIQUE BECAUSE IT TAKES YOU A LITTLE LONGER TO OVERCOME SOME OBSTACLES AND TO EXPERIENCE TRULY EXPERIENCED YOUR LOSS DOESN'T MEAN THAT SOMETHING IS WRONG OR BROKEN WITH YOU.

YOU JUST MEAN YOUR JOURNEY IS SO SPECIFICALLY WHAT I WANT TO FOCUS ON FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF MINUTES IS WHAT WAS PRESENTED EARLIER.

AND THAT IS DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF.

HAVE ANY OF YOU HEARD OF THAT TERM BEFORE, WHILE HE WAS CALLED IN BY IN THE MIDDLE EIGHTIES AND DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF IS THE GRIEF THAT A PERSON EXPERIENCE WHEN YOU INCUR A LOSS THAT EITHER IS NOT, OR CANNOT BE OPENLY KNOWLEDGE, SOCIALLY SANCTIONED, EXCEPTED, OR PUBLICLY MORE.

AND WE SAME ROOM.

WHAT FALLS IN THOSE CATEGORIES TYPE OF GRIEF.

I CAN'T OPENLY EXPRESS, WELL, I'VE TAKEN THE LIBERTY OF BREAKING IT DOWN INTO THREE MAJOR CATEGORIES.

ONE IS A DEATH THAT OTHERS THINK SHOULDN'T BE MORE.

BUT BEFORE I DO THAT, LET ME SHARE MY EXPERIENCE.

AND I THINK IT WAS ONE OF MY FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF THAT HAPPENED APPROXIMATELY 20 YEARS AGO.

AND WHEN IT DID, I DID RECOGNIZE IT AS THAT, BUT AS LIFE HAPPENS, UM, I REALIZED THAT THAT IS WHAT I EXPERIENCE.

UH, MY HUSBAND WAS KILLED IN A CAR ACCIDENT, LEFT HOME, NEVER TO COME BACK.

I FOUND OUT ABOUT HIS YES, BY A KNOCK ON THE DOOR, UM, FROM THE STATE POLICE COMING TO LET ME KNOW THAT HE WAS KILLED.

AND IN MINUTES MY FAMILY WAS THERE.

AND I WOULD SAY FOR THE NEXT SIX MONTHS, I DIDN'T SPEND A DAY ALONE.

I WAS ALWAYS AROUND FAMILY OR FRIENDS.

SOMEBODY WAS ALWAYS THERE.

BUT AS I REFLECTED ON THE PLANS, WE HAD, WE HAD A FIVE-YEAR PLAN.

WE WERE IN YEAR NUMBER FOUR, THE CHILDREN, WE WERE PLANNING FOR SOME OF THE COMMENTS OF MY WELL-INTENDED FAMILY WHO LOVES ME WITHOUT CONDITION WOULD SAY, PAM, YOU HAVE TO MOVE ON, PAY HIM.

YOU CAN'T KEEP TALKING ABOUT CHILDREN.

YOU AND CALVIN NEVER HAD YOU.

CAN'T TALK ABOUT WHAT WILL PEOPLE THINK IF YOU KEEP TALKING ABOUT THE PLACE I AM TOO OLD TO MOVE IN THE YEAR AND THE HOUSE YOU ALL WERE GOING TO BUILD AND THE THINGS YOU ALL WERE GOING TO DO, OR SOMETIMES WHEN I BRING IT UP, THEY CHANGED THE SUBJECT, NOT RECOGNIZING THAT I HAD A NEED TO EXPRESS THE IMPACT OF MY LOSS.

AND THAT'S THE PROCESS OF GOING THROUGH AND WHAT WE DO AS WELL-INTENDED FAMILY AND LOVED ONES IS WE TRY TO RUSH THE PROCESS.

BUT JUST BECAUSE A PERSON DOESN'T TALK ABOUT THEIR PAIN, THAT MEANS THE PAIN THAT MAY EXIST.

AND THAT'S A REALITY WITH TRAUMA.

AND MY ADVICE OR ENCOURAGEMENT IS IF YOU'RE NOT COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT IT, ALWAYS GET THAT PERSON TO SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP THEM AND TAKE THEM TO THE NEXT TO THE NEXT LEVEL.

CAUSE SOMETIMES WE COULD ONLY GO SO FAR IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS, EVEN AS HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS, AND IT'S NOT A SIGN OF WEAKNESS, IT'S JUST THE REALITY.

WE HAVE TO RECOGNIZE WHERE WE COULD START AND WHERE WE COULD STOP.

BUT I CONTINUED TO TALK,

TELL I WAS ABLE TO GET THE RELIEF THAT I NEEDED, BUT OFTEN TIMES PEOPLE SUPPRESS OR INTERNALIZE THOSE FEELINGS AND IT COME OUT IN A DIFFERENT WAY.

BECAUSE AGAIN, JUST BECAUSE I DON'T TALK ABOUT IT, THAT NEED THAT EXISTS.

SO ONE THING WE COULD DO FOR PEOPLE THAT ARE HURTING PEOPLE THAT ARE IN PAIN, PEOPLE THAT ARE TRAUMATIZED IS TO LISTEN.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE AN ANSWER.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE MIRACLE CLEAR.

SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED TO VALIDATE THOSE FEELINGS AND LISTEN AND BE EMPATHETIC OR SHOW THAT WE DO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE GOING THROUGH.

AND AGAIN, IF IT'S MORE THAN YOU COULD BEAR, ALWAYS JUST GET THAT PERSON TO SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP THEM AND PICK UP WHERE YOU LEFT OFF.

SO THE THREE MAJOR CATEGORIES OF LOSS THAT ARE OFTEN DISENFRANCHISED, BUT OTHERS ARE ONE THEN THAT OTHERS THINGS SHOULDN'T BE MORE PIT.

HOW MANY PET LOVERS WE HAVE WONDERFUL.

AND A PET IS MORE THAN A PET TO PET LOVERS.

THEY'RE PART OF YOUR FAMILY.

AND REMEMBER WHEN I HAD CATS, YOU COULDN'T TELL ME EBONY, EBONY DIDN'T KNOW WHEN I DROVE UP EBONY, WASN'T HAPPY TO SEE ME.

I DEBATED ALL DAY WHEN YOU DIDN'T LOVE ME.

AND WASN'T PART OF MY FAMILY, BUT FOR SOMEONE WHO CAN'T SHARE THAT FUN, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO GIVE YOU THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE DEATH OF A PET AS SOMEONE WHO WILL.

SO THAT'S ONE, UM, THAT, UH, AREA THAT PEOPLE FEEL LIKE REALLY SHOULDN'T BE MORE GET OVER IT.

UH, THE LOSS OF A CHILD GIVEN UP FOR ADOPTION.

OFTENTIMES WE THINK ALL THE BETTER OFF, BUT THERE IS STILL AN ATTACHMENT AND THERE'S STILL SO MANY EMOTIONS.

CAUSE REMEMBER, GRIEF IS YOUR RESPONSE TO A LOSS.

OKAY? SO THERE ARE EMOTIONS THAT DEATH OF THE NEXT SPOUSE.

SOMETIMES WE THINK, OH, THAT'S WHAT THEY HAD COME IN.

OR THEY WERE MEANING.

SO YOU SHOULDN'T WORRY OR GRIEVE GLEN HE'S.

SO SHE'S GONE.

NEVER HEARD THEM, NOT ILL WISHES FROM SOMEBODY OR REGARDING SOMEBODY WHO WAS AN EX OR RELATIONSHIPS WITH SAME SEX PARTNERS.

IF YOUR FAMILY DON'T ACKNOWLEDGE THAT, THAT'S OKAY, YOU COULD COME TO THE FUNERAL, BUT YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE ON THE PROGRAM.

YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE ACKNOWLEDGED.

YOU'RE NOT GOING TO BE RECOGNIZED AS PART OF A FAMILY, NOT RECOGNIZING WHAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS OR HE IS ALSO A MISCARRIAGE.

UM, OFTENTIMES WE'LL HEAR CLICHES PEOPLE OR SEE, OR WHATEVER WAS GOD'S WILL.

AND THAT WAS FOR THE BEST, BUT YOU STILL HAVE TO EXPERIENCE THOSE FEELINGS AND THOSE EMOTIONS.

AND WHEN PEOPLE ARE AT THEIR LOWEST POINT, YOU JUST CAN'T CONNECT THAT WHEN SOMETHING BAD HAPPENS, THAT THAT'S FOR THE BEST, EVEN THOUGH IT MAY WORK OUT FAR, WILL GOOGLE IT AT THAT TIME.

THAT'S NOT WHAT THAT INDIVIDUAL NEEDS TO HEAR.

WHAT THEY NEED TO HEAR IS THAT I UNDERSTAND THIS IS TOUGH.

NOT ALL IT'S GOING TO WORK OUT.

SO THERE ARE DEBTS THAT OTHERS FEEL LIKE SHOULD MEAN MORE OR, UM, I'M NOT CONDONING EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS, BUT IF A PARTNER IN EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIR GUY, YOU DON'T HAVE ANY RIGHTS.

YOU SHOULDN'T FEEL ANYTHING, NOT RECOGNIZING WHAT CONNECTION EXISTED.

SO IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT WHAT THE RELATIONSHIP WAS.

IT WAS THE CONNECTION THAT EXISTS BECAUSE OF THE RELATIONSHIP, UM, AND ABUSE.

GOOD WRITTENS.

WE HAVE VERY LITTLE TOLERANCE FOR PERPETRATORS, FOR ABUSERS.

IF AN ABUSER DIE, TYPICALLY WHAT YOU FEEL IN STORE FOR THEIR FAMILY, FOR THEY HAD A COMMENT.

THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THOUGHTS WE WE HEAR.

SO IF I'M A FAMILY MEMBER OF THAT PERSON, I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE TALKING ABOUT MY PAIN.

HE STILL WAS MY LOVED ONE.

EVEN IF HE WAS INCARCERATED, HE'S STILL MY CHILD.

I STILL HAVE LOVE FOR HIM, BUT I'M NOT ENCOURAGED TO SHARE MY PAIN AS I WOULD HAD IT NOT BEEN FOR THE CIRCUMSTANCES.

ALSO THERE'S ANOTHER CATEGORY, DEATH OF PEOPLE WHO SUFFER.

UM, WE THINK WHEN THE ELDERLY

DIED MAY LIVE THE FULL LIFE.

BUT IF YOU HAVE A PARENT OR A LOVED ONE WHO HAVE LIVED 70, 80, 90, A HUNDRED YEARS, EVEN AT THEIR DEATH, YOU STILL EXPERIENCED GRIEF AS IF THEY WOULD HAVE DIED 50 YEARS EARLY.

SO OFTENTIMES PEOPLE ARE TELL YOU THEY LIVED THEIR LIFE, WHICH IS MORE THAN FOR THEY IN A BETTER PLACE.

AND YOU'RE RIGHT.

BUT YOU STILL HAVE THE EXPERIENCE, THOSE FEELINGS THAT YOU AIR.

AND THAT'S THE KEY WITH DISENFRANCHISED GRIEF, YOU'RE NOT ENCOURAGED OR YOUR GRIEVING IS NOT SANCTIONED AND ACTUALLY DISCOURAGE WHICH FORCES YOU TO INTERNALIZE THOSE THINGS THAT YOU DO FEEL.

AND THE LAST CATEGORY THAT WE ARE STIGMATIZED THERE, WE TALKING ABOUT PEOPLE WHO DIED BY SUICIDE.

I THINK THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF EDUCATION IN THE LAST FEW YEARS, BUT WE STILL HAVE OUR BELIEFS.

IF YOU COMMIT SUICIDE, WHERE ARE YOU GOING AWAY? YOU KNOW? UM, AND SOME OF US HAVE SOME VERY STRONG BELIEFS.

SO IF IT'S MY CHILDHOOD COMMITTED SUICIDE, I DON'T FEEL THAT COMFORT IN ACKNOWLEDGING MY CHILD'S SPLIT.

AND SO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO IS SHOW COMPASSION FOR EACH OTHER.

AND AS I SAY, PROVIDE THE ENVIRONMENT FOR PEOPLE TO FEEL THAT NUMBER ONE, IT'S OKAY TO FEEL CAUSE YOU'RE GONNA FEED AND IT'S OKAY TO EXPRESS THOSE EMOTIONS YOU HAVE BECAUSE OF YOUR EXPERIENCE.

AND SOMETIMES THE BEST ANSWER IS NO ANSWER.

IT'S JUST UNDERSTANDING.

AND IT'S JUST THIS.

AND AS YOU ALL KNOW, WITH THE PANDEMIC, THAT'S BROUGHT UP KIND OF A RIPPLE EFFECT OF TRAUMA IN OUR CITY.

WE'VE BEEN, WE'VE HAD AN EXTREMELY BUSY YEAR, UNFORTUNATELY.

SO WE ARE GOING TO DO A TECHNIQUE.

WHAT WE DO AT THE CAC, WITH OUR CHILDREN AND WITH THEIR PARENTS, AS WELL AS OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT COLLEAGUES AND OUR STAFF IS WE ARE HELPING PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO TRAUMA OR HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO STRESS FOR A LONG TIME.

AND WE'RE ALSO WORKING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HELPING THE PEOPLE.

SO IT'S A TWO WAY APPROACH WORKING WITH THE CLIENTS AND THEN WORKING WITH THE PEOPLE WHO ARE HELPING THE CLIENTS.

SO MEDITATION CAN BE KIND OF A BREATHING THING.

LIKE IF YOU TAKE A DEEP BREATH IN AND THEN YOU LET IT OUT, OR IF YOU'RE SITTING QUIETLY IN PRAYER, THOSE ARE ALL EXAMPLES OF CONCENTRATIVE, SLOW MEDITATION.

UM, BUT WHAT PEOPLE OFTEN DON'T REALIZE IS THAT SOMETIMES PEOPLE ARE SO STRESSED OR TRAUMATIZED, THEY CAN'T GET STILL LONG ENOUGH TO PRACTICE MEDITATION.

SO THERE'S SOMETHING CALLED ACTIVE MEDITATIONS THAT BASICALLY GIVE YOU THE SAME RESULT.

YOU GET TO A RELAXED PLACE JUST AS SERGEANT HOWARD MENTIONED, BUT YOU DO IT THROUGH ACTIVITY.

WELL THAT'S BECAUSE WE ARE, WE'RE GIVEN CERTAIN GOD-GIVEN THINGS IN OUR BODIES TO HELP US WITH STRESS.

SO WE'RE LITERALLY GOING TO SHAKE THE STRESS AND SHAKING ALSO HELPS TO GET RID OF CERTAIN POSTURES.

WE GET STUCK IN LIKE, SOMETIMES YOU CATCH YOURSELF LIKE THIS, IF YOU'RE REALLY STRESSED, UM, OR YOU, WE MIGHT BE SHAKING, UH, THINGS THAT WERE STUCK IN THE WAY THAT WE'RE THINKING NEEDS TO GET SHAKEN.

SO WE'RE LITERALLY SHAKING MIND AND BODY, AND THEN WE'RE GONNA STOP.

AND WE'RE GOING TO ASK YOU TO JUST BREATHE QUIETLY AND NOTICE WHAT YOU'RE EXPERIENCING IN YOUR BODY.

UM, THAT'S ONE OF THE SIMPLE CONCEPTS OF STRESS IS BEING ABLE TO TURN OFF, GET AWAY.

BUT WHAT WE OFTEN DO IS WE PICTURE IN OUR MINDS THAT IT HAS TO BE LIKE THIS LONG VACATION, OR IF WE'RE GOING TO PRACTICE SELF-CARE, IT'S THE GYM THREE TIMES A WEEK.

AND THAT IS A FORM OF SELF-CARE, BUT WHAT WE TEACH PEOPLE AND WHAT WE'RE SHARING WITH YOU TODAY IS THAT SELF-CARE, THAT REALLY GIVES PEOPLE THE TOOLS THAT THEY NEED TO DEAL WITH A STRESSFUL JOB OR A STRESSFUL LIFE, OR JUST LITTLE SIMPLE THINGS THAT YOU CAN WEAVE INTO YOUR LIFE EVERY DAY.

SO THIS EXERCISE, WE JUST DID, OUR STAFF MAY GO INTO AN OFFICE, CLOSE THE DOOR, TURN ON MUSIC AND SHAKE.

IF WE HAD A REALLY SERIOUS CASE WITH A LOT OF DEVASTATION AND OUR HEARTS ARE HURTING AND YOU KNOW, WE'RE WORRIED THESE CHILDREN, WE MIGHT SHAKE THAT OFF A LITTLE BIT THROUGH THIS EXERCISE.

NOW, MAYBE WE CAN'T PULL OUT THE MUSIC.

MAYBE IT'S A FEW MINUTES OF SHAKING OR MAYBE IT'S BREATH WORK WITH THE IDEA IS THAT YOU WEAVE IT INTO YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE.

THAT'S REALLY TRUE SELF CARE.

AND THAT'S WHAT WE TEACH.

SO WHEN WE WERE SHAKING AND DANCING, WE WERE A LITTLE BIT TAKEN AWAY.

BUT ANOTHER WAY OF LOOKING AT IT IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT BEING TAKEN AWAY AS WHERE YOU ACTUALLY WERE BROUGHT TO THE HERE AND NOW FOR WHATEVER WE WERE DOING, THE BUSINESS THAT WAS GOING ON UP THERE ON THE STEPS OR WHATEVER WE WERE THINKING ABOUT THIS AFTERNOON, THE TO-DO LIST WE HAVE OR SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT, THAT WAS UPSETTING DURING THE TIME THAT WE WERE SHAKING AND DANCING, OUR MINDS WERE BROUGHT TO THE PRESENT MOMENT.

AND GUESS WHAT? THAT'S REALLY THE RECIPE.

THE RECIPE IS BECAUSE STRESS IS RELATED TO WHAT'S ABOUT TO HAPPEN OR IT'S RELATED TO STUFF THAT ALREADY HAPPENED.

IF WE CAN BRING OUR MIND TO RIGHT NOW, WE'RE, DE-STRESSING WHETHER WE DO IT THROUGH BREATHING OR THROUGH MOVEMENT.

SO THAT'S REALLY AN IMPORTANT THING TO TEACH EVERYONE.

AND ANYONE CAN LEARN THIS AND ANYONE CAN TEACH IT.

IT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO HAVE DEGREES IN TO DO WELL.

SO THAT WOULD BE, I GUESS, THERE'S SO MANY THINGS THAT WE COULD TEACH YOU TODAY.

IN FACT, OUR MIND-BODY TECHNIQUE, A TOOL KIT HAS ABOUT 40

UM, AND THEN THE LAST THING I WOULD JUST SHARE IS BECAUSE I WAS ASKED TO SPEAK ABOUT VICARIOUS TRAUMA IS, YOU KNOW, WE LEARNED A LOT THIS YEAR WITH THE PANDEMIC ABOUT VIRUSES AND ILLNESS AND, UH, CONTAGIOUSNESS AND CONTAGION AND HOW TO, YOU KNOW, HOW TO MASK UP AND ALL OF THAT STUFF.

UM, AND NOW, YOU KNOW, LUCKILY WE HAVE A VACCINE, RIGHT? WELL, IF YOU THINK ABOUT TRAUMA AND STRESS, EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T HAVE STRESS IN YOUR CHILDHOOD, MAYBE YOU WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH THAT YOU NEVER HAD ANY TRAUMA.

IF YOU WERE LIVING IN A COMMUNITY THAT IS RIDDLED WITH STRESS AND TRAUMA DUE TO ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT THINGS, OR IF YOU WERE WORKING WITH INDIVIDUALS ON A DAILY BASIS WHO HAD TRAUMA, YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT THAT.

YOU'RE GETTING EXPOSED JUST LIKE YOU MIGHT GET EXPOSED TO COVID WITH COVID.

YOU KNOW, WE HAD A VACCINATION, FORTUNATELY TRAUMA, THE EFFECTS OF TRAUMA AND STRESS AMONG PEOPLE CAN BE JUST AS CONTAGIOUS.

SO IF THERE'S A FLOOD IN OUR COMMUNITY, EVEN IF THAT'S JUST ONE EXAMPLE, IF THERE'S A FLOOD IN OUR COMMUNITY AND ONE PERSON'S HOUSE FLOODED PEOPLE ARE IMPACTED BECAUSE WHEN YOU LIVE IN COMMUNITY, WE ARE ALL CONNECTED.

SO WE ALL HAVE SOME VERSION OF VICARIOUS TRAUMA GOING ON.

AND WHAT CARIOUS IS JUST A FANCY WORD THAT SAYS, YOU KNOW, I'M GOING THROUGH, YOU'RE GOING THROUGH THIS AND I'M EXPERIENCING THE SAME THING BECAUSE I'M WITNESSING I'M BEARING WITNESS.

SO WE GET THESE EXPOSURES AND UNLIKE COVID WHERE WE CAN GET A SHOT, WE CAN'T GET A SHOT FOR TRAUMA AND STRESS, RIGHT? SO GUESS WHAT THE ANSWER IS.

IT'S SELF CARE.

SELF CARE IS REALLY THE ONLY ANTIDOTE TO BEING EXPOSED TO STRESS OVER A PERIOD OF TIME.

AND AS I SAID BEFORE, THE KIND OF SELF CARE I'M TALKING ABOUT IS REALLY LITTLE SIMPLE THINGS.

YOU CAN BE IN A WHEELCHAIR.

YOU COULD BE, YOU KNOW, YOU COULD BE, UM, REALLY LIMITED FINANCIALLY.

ANYONE CAN LEARN HOW TO USE SELF CARE IN THEIR DAILY LIFE.

AND THAT'S REALLY THE ONLY KIND OF ANTIDOTE THAT WE HAVE FOR BEING EXPOSED TO STRESS AND TRAUMA.

SO I'M GOING TO CLOSE WITH JUST A REALLY QUICK, DEEP BREATH AND I'LL OPEN IT UP FOR QUESTIONS.

WHY DO WE BREATHE? BY THE WAY, WE TAKE THESE LONG, DEEP BREATHS IN, THROUGH THE NOSE, OUT THROUGH THE MOUTH AND IT GIVE, TAKE ANOTHER DEEP BREATH OUT THROUGH THE MOUTH AND WHY DON'T WE DO THIS? BECAUSE IT'S MOST SIMPLE BUT POWERFUL WAY OF INTERACTING AND HAVING AN IMPACT ON OUR NERVOUS SYSTEM.

WHEN YOU BREATHE THAT DEEP, DEEP BREATH, YOU'RE ACTUALLY SENDING A SIGNAL TO THE VEGAS NERVE RIGHT HERE.

CAUSE THE BELLY EXPANDS AND THE VEGAS NERVE SENDS A MESSAGE TO THE BRAIN THAT SAYS I'M SAFE.

IT'S OKAY.

THERE'S NO DANGER AT THE MOMENT.

SO THAT SIMPLE MOMENT OF JUST, YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS.
